Have you ever awakened to feel something crawling on you during the night only to look around and find nothing? Or, perhaps you’re about to shower only to find a centipede-looking creature with tentacles and beady eyes staring up at you? Well, maybe it didn’t have beady eyes or even tentacles, but at the time, it sure seemed like it did. Then, you know all too well the importance of perimeter pest control.

Living here in the Northern Central part of Florida, we are blessed with warmer than average temperatures year-round. We also have above-average rainfall. This warm, humid climate makes the perfect environment for various pests that are often on the move seeking out new shelter and food sources. If you’re like us, you want to keep them outside of your Summerfield home where they belong. Here are some tips on how to keep hair-raising insects out of your home and away from you and your family.window caulking

Check All Windows and Doors

Check all your windows and doors. Bugs can get through even the tiniest cracks. When a heavy rainstorm hits, many are washed up near our homes and make their way inside through gaps and holes. Check your windows and screens for rips and tears and replace them if necessary.  We recommend ensuring your screen meshes are at least 200 holes per square inch to keep out nasty buggers. Be sure also to check all doors for open cracks. Remember that if any light can seep through, bugs are probably able to get through as well.

Seal Any Outside Cracks or Gaps Outside Your Summerfield Area Home

Just like your windows and doors, ants, spiders, cockroaches, and other creepy crawlers can find their way into your home through openings, cracks, and gaps within your foundation.  Repair any weak points outside your home and check your trim for rotting wood.  We also suggest making sure make sure your attic screen vents are intact.

Clean Up Debris Around the Outside of Your Home

Many insects thrive and breed in dark, moist environments. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, and fleas and ticks thrive in damp shady areas, including the thatch in your lawn, debris piles, leaf litter, and mulch. Keeping your outdoor space clean, well-maintained, mowed, and free of debris will help reduce the insect population outside, hence less chance of them getting inside. If you keep firewood, try to store it away from your house. Spiders, termites, ants, and other pests are attracted to the wood, so the further you keep it away from your house, the less chance these unpleasant critters have of a home invasion.

Keep Gutters Clean

Try to think in terms of a bug. You’ve probably seen the Disney movie, A Bug’s Life. So, if you were a bug, where would you hide out from predators? Clogged gutters full of leaves, dirt, and other debris make an ideal home for insects as well as birds and rodents. So be sure to clean or have them cleaned out periodically to prevent creating a haven for unwanted residents.

Make Time for That Annual Cleaning

We’re not suggesting you take everything out of your property, hose it down and place it back again. But, take a few moments to remove any easy access to food and clean up all areas where food might have fallen. Sweep up crumbs under the stove, the fridge, and properly seal your food containers to ensure pests do not have access to new food supplies. Then clean out your closets and remove old items of clothing you and your family no longer wear. Get rid of old boxes, newspapers, cans, and any containers you don’t use. These are the specific areas of your home you should focus on:standing water in a barrel

  • Kitchen
  • Under sinks
  • Dining room
  • Cupboards where food is stored
  • Basement
  • Attics
  • Crawlspaces

Remove Any Presence of Excess Water

That leaky faucet isn’t just giving you an excessive water bill. Moisture caused by leaks and damp areas attract insects such as cockroaches and centipedes, especially here in Florida.  Fix any leaks and indoor plumbing that isn’t working correctly. Keep wet clothes, bathing suits, and towels off the floor. Dark, moist areas make an attractive home to many bugs sheltering them from predators. So, while it’s convenient to throw those wet clothes from the pool on the floor, remember hanging them up is the safest way to keep insects away.
