Common Lawn Diseases in Ocala

They say the best way to stop a disease is to prevent it in the first place. But if you aren’t aware of what to look for, how can you prevent it. Learn to recognize the following lawn diseases common to Florida lawns and you can take the proper actions before too much damage is done.

Brown Patch
High levels of heat and moisture create optimal conditions for the formation of brown patch. Brown patch appears as 3 to 10 foot circles of brown or dead grass the diseases leaves in its wake. Grasses such as St. Augustine and Zoysia are especially susceptible to brown patch. Watch for it in summer and fall when the heat and humidity are at their peak.

Dollar Spot

At first no larger than a silver dollar, dollar spot fungus spreads quickly, killing the grass all the way to the root. Other signs of dollar spot fungus include grass blades with pale marks of infection and cobwebs on the grass with the morning dew. Once dollar spot fungus takes root, the only solution is to remove infected grass and plug the area with new sod.

Fairy Ring

In Ocala and all over Florida, fairy rings appear year after year each summer in the same spot. This is due to having something in the ground or around the affected area. They appear as 3 to 20-foot rings of dark green. Occasionally mushrooms grow in the circle giving the phenomenon it’s mystical quality but it’s actually organic matter left behind. At ADVANTAGE GREEN our fungicide application services can promptly take care of Fairy Ring and many other problems your lawn may face.

Fray Leaf Spot

As the hot humid weather sets in, Gray Leaf Spot will move in. It will appear on leaf blades and the grass will wither and die if the disease becomes severe. Allow your grass to dry out to best control this disease. As the infection spreads it slows down the growth of the plant, leaving it weak and vulnerable to other lawn diseases.

Lawn diseases can be tricky to prevent and even trickier to get rid of. At ADVANTAGE GREEN we have the means to treat a variety of lawn diseases by using targeted fungicides to improve the health of the plant.

Common Lawn Pests Found In Ocala

Mole Crickets
If you’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting an adult mole cricket you’d know they are a bizarre, alien-like insect that can cause a lot of damage to your lawn. The southern mole cricket can damage turf, pasture grasses, crops, and gardens by tunneling under the surface of the soil in search of food, disturbing fragile root systems. Keeping your yard properly aerated can prevent layers of thatch buildup that make ideal nesting spots for these scary insects.

Fire Ants
The type of fire ants that we see here in Ocala are not native to the state of Florida. In fact, they aren’t native to the U.S. at all. Fire ants come from the jungles of South America and hitched a ride here sometime in the 1930s. They found the climate here similar to that of their native home and with no natural predators to stop them, they quickly established themselves in the Sunshine State. 90 Years later there is hardly a place in the southern U.S. that doesn’t have fire ants.

Fire ants are very aggressive and will attack anything that disturbs their nests, including playing children and curious pets. Their stings can be painful and even life-threatening to those with allergies. Fire ants are a hardy species that does not respond well to traditional ant control products. If you see fire ants in your lawn call the professionals at ADVANTAGE GREEN immediately.

Billbugs
Billbug is black beetles that have a “bill” or snout on their heads. They live in the thatch under your grass and feed on your grass. The billbug’s grass of choice is zoysiagrass and Bermudagrass, and most damage occurs during the fall and spring. A good sign that you have a billbug infestation is if your grass doesn’t respond to proper irrigation.
